in establishing new connections in China and elsewhere,

during the last two years and a half. From the Department

of Commercial Intelligence particularly we have had the

greatest kindness, but the fact that for many years before

the War we did with German houses in China a turnover in

British piece goods etc. of an average annual value of some

£400,000.-, still appears to rankle in the minds of those

who direct the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce. Hence an at-

mosphere of mis-informed suspicion which has a hampering

influence on our determined endeavours to divert into clean

hands the business formerly done by our enemies.
