For some time past we have been endeavouring, with considerable success, in establishing new connections in China and elsewhere, during the last two and a half years. From the Department of Commercial Intelligence particularly we have had the greatest kindness, but the fact that for many years before the War we did with German houses in China a turnover in British piece goods etc. of an average annual value of some £400,000, still appears to rankle in the minds of those who direct the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce. Hence an atmosphere of mis-informed suspicion which has a hampering influence on our determined endeavours to divert into clean hands the business formerly done by our enemies.
